As I look back on this poem, written for a friend who was taken from the world too soon, I see the comment by another friend, another Richard, who now also has been taken from us too soon. Both kind and caring and talented men. The two never met one another in life; maybe they have met since. I'd like to think they are at this moment debating the fine points of the translation of an obscure classical Spanish text. This life has sharp teeth and is indifferent, unfair and ineffably cruel; may we never forget it as we dance for our lives on the points of those teeth.
